Early Life and Education

Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld was a German historical painter born in Leipzig in 1794. He received his artistic education in Munich under the tutelage of Peter Cornelius.

Debut and Recognition

Schnorr made his debut as a painter with the work "Joseph Sold by His Brothers," which garnered critical acclaim for its execution and subject matter. He went on to create several paintings depicting the Seven Sacraments for the All Saints Church in Munich, based on sketches by Heinrich Hess.

The Nazarenes in Rome

In 1835, Schnorr embarked on a journey to Rome, where he joined a group of artists known as the "Nazarenes." This group sought to revive the spiritual and aesthetic values of early Christian and medieval art.

Major Works in Rome

During his time in Rome, Schnorr produced numerous notable paintings, including:

"Madonna in trono"

"Saint Catherine Carried by Angels over the Sea"
"Mater amabilis"
"Christ Blessing the Children"
"Saint Joseph with the Infant Savior"
"The Wise and Foolish Virgins"
"Christ"
"The Prodigal Son"

These works gained widespread recognition through engraved and lithographed reproductions.

Genre Paintings and Later Years

In addition to his religious paintings, Schnorr was also skilled in genre painting, capturing scenes of everyday Roman life with a keen eye for detail. As his career progressed, he continued to produce important works and was respected for his contributions to both religious art and genre painting.
