Early Life and Education
The renowned Soviet and Russian historian, philologist, and ethnographer, specialized in the ethnic history of the North Caucasus. In 1968, he graduated from the Karachay-Cherkessian State Pedagogical Institute. He continued his education at the Institute of Ethnography, Russian Academy of Sciences, where he completed his postgraduate studies in 1973.
Academic Career
From 1973 to 1977, he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Ethnography. In 1977, he won a competition for social scientists in Kazakhstan, which led to his appointment as pro-rector of the Kustanai State Pedagogical Institute from 1977 to 1983. In 1983, he became a docent in the Department of General History at the Kabardino-Balkarian State University. Three years later, he was appointed head of the department, a position he held until 2002.
Doctorate and Research
In 1988, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, titled "Traditional Social Institutions of the Peoples of the North Caucasus in the Late 19th and Early 20th Century." His research primarily focused on the history and ethnography of Balkaria and Karachay.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades. In 1977, he won the competition for society scholars in Kazakhstan. In 1993 and 1994, he was awarded two grants from the Russian Academy of Sciences. He also became the first scholarship recipient from the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Mentorship and Publications
As a renowned scholar, he has mentored numerous students, guiding 17 towards their PhDs and four towards doctorates. His expansive body of work includes over 200 scientific publications, 16 teaching manuals, and 11 monographs.
Legacy
He currently holds the position of professor at the Department of Economics at the Kabardino-Balkarian State University. His contributions to the field of history, philology, and ethnography have left an enduring legacy. His research has shed light on the rich cultural heritage of the North Caucasus and continues to inspire new generations of scholars.
