Scientific Research and Contributions
Ostapenya made significant contributions to the field of hydrobiology. He conducted extensive research on the caloricity of plankton in Cuban waters during a Soviet-Cuban scientific expedition. Upon his return, he established the productive hydrobiology direction, a research area initiated by his mentor, G.G. Winberg.
In his doctoral dissertation (1989), Ostapenya innovated the concept of seston, particles suspended in water. He demonstrated that seston is not just a physical aggregate but an essential structural and functional component of aquatic ecosystems, playing a pivotal role in nutrient cycling and water quality.
Leadership and Institutional Roles
Ostapenya held various leadership positions throughout his career. He directed the Hydrobiology Sector of the Experimental Biology Laboratory at Belarus State University from 1971 to 1991. Subsequently, he headed the Hydroecology Laboratory of the Biological Faculty (1991-2001, 2005-present). From 2001 to 2005, he served as director of the Interdepartmental Center for National Parks and Reserves at Belarus State University.
