Biography of Alexander Zhurbin
ComposerAlexander Zhurbin is a renowned composer known for his work in both classical and popular genres. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, he began his musical journey at a young age. He studied cello at the Tashkent Conservatory before pursuing composition at the Gnesin Institute in Moscow and the Leningrad Conservatory.
Creative Life
Throughout his career, Zhurbin's creative life unfolded in two parallel directions. On one hand, he achieved great success in the "serious, academic" genres, composing numerous works including symphonies, concertos, quartets, chamber music, vocal cycles, oratorios, and cantatas. Some of his notable compositions include three symphonies, a piano concerto, concertos for viola, cello, and violin, as well as various chamber music pieces.
Family and Education
Zhurbin was born into a family of engineers in Tashkent. His wife, Irina Ginzburg, is a poet and translator, and his son, Lev Zhurbin, is a student at the Juilliard School, specializing in the viola and composition. Zhurbin completed his education at the Tashkent Conservatory, the Gnesin Institute, and the Leningrad Conservatory, where he wrote his dissertation on the late symphonies of Gustav Mahler. He studied under esteemed teachers such as N.I. Peyko, G.I. Litinsky, A.I. Khachaturian, S.M. Slonimsky, and Yu.G. Kon.
Accomplishments
In 1970, Alexander Zhurbin became a member of the Union of Composers. He found success not only in the classical genres but also in the field of light popular music. He has composed a multitude of songs, including "Molba," "Pesnya o schastye," "Loshadka - zhizn," "Vse k luchshemu," "Poslevoennoe tango," and songs for children, totaling around two hundred. He also has a strong interest in musical theater and has written six operas, three ballets, and sixteen musicals, some of which are well-known productions like "Penelope," "Mymra," "Stakan vody," "Bindyuzhnik i korol," "Bluzhdayushchie zvezdy," and "Kamera obskura."
Furthermore, Zhurbin's music has been featured in over fifty films, including "Eskadron gusar letuchikh," "Les," "V moey smerti prosu vinit' Klavu K.," "Melodiya na dva golosa," "Bindyuzhnik i korol," "Bluzhdayushchie zvezdy," "Solntse v avos'ke," "Bednaya Masha," and "Zhenatyy kholostyak." Since 1990, Zhurbin has lived with his family in New York, where he continues to pursue his artistic endeavors and explore new creative possibilities.
International Recognition
Throughout his career, Zhurbin has received international and national awards, including the "Star of the Year" in the United Kingdom. Many newspapers worldwide, including The New York Times, have compared him to Leonard Bernstein. His rock opera "Orpheus and Eurydice" performed an impressive 2500 consecutive shows, and its recording sold over two million copies. Several American producers are currently collaborating with Zhurbin to bring his theatrical works to the United States.

In addition to music, Zhurbin has also worked as a journalist, with his articles published in newspapers such as "Izvestiya," "Literaturnaya Gazeta," "Obshchaya Gazeta," and "Novoye Russkoye Slovo" (New York). His hobbies include reading serious philosophical works by Russian and international authors, collecting paintings by contemporary artists, and building a vast collection of recordings and sheet music. He is indifferent to fishing, sports, and hunting but enjoys traveling to exotic countries such as Australia, Mexico, and the West Indies. Zhurbin is also a fan of good movies and fine wine.
