Biography of General-Major Aleksandr Ignatyevich Kazartsev
Early Life and Military ServiceAleksandr Ignatyevich Kazartsev was born on August 25, 1901, in Talmenka, Altai Krai, Russia, into a peasant family. After completing three years of education, he joined the Red Army in 1920 and fought in the Civil War against both Grigory Kaigorodov in the Altai mountains and Roman Ungern von Sternberg in Transbaikal. Kazartsev went on to graduate from infantry courses in Irkutsk, the Omsk Infantry School, and the M.V. Frunze Military Academy in 1936.
World War II
In March 1942, Kazartsev was appointed commander of the 87th Rifle Division, formed in the Far East. He entered the fighting on the Eastern Front in July 1942, where his division played a crucial role in the defensive battles of the Battle of Stalingrad.
In March 1943, Kazartsev took command of the 126th Rifle Division, which he led until June 1944. Under his command, the division distinguished itself in the liberation of Melitopol in October 1943, where they eliminated over 5,000 German troops, destroyed approximately 80 tanks and self-propelled guns, and seized significant spoils. For his exceptional leadership, Kazartsev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on November 1, 1943.
Post-War and Retirement
After World War II, Kazartsev participated in the Soviet-Japanese War of 1945 as commander of the 72nd Rifle Corps. He later held various high-ranking positions, including Deputy Commander of a Military District, Commander of the 1st Air Defense Army (Moscow), and Chief of Logistics for the Air Defense Forces. Kazartsev graduated from the Higher Academic Courses of the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1947.
Retirement and Death
Kazartsev retired from active service in 1961 with the rank of General-Colonel. He settled in Moscow, where he passed away on June 16, 1985. He was laid to rest at the Kuntsevo Cemetery in Moscow.
