Biography of Alexandra Georgievna

Princess of Greece and Denmark, later known as Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna, was born on August 30, 1870. She was the daughter of King George I of Greece and his wife Olga Constantinovna. Alexandra married Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich of Russia on April 17, 1889, in St. Petersburg.

Tragic Demise

Sadly, Alexandra's life was cut short when she passed away on September 12, 1891, due to a tragic accident that resulted in premature childbirth during her seventh month of pregnancy. Remarkably, her son, Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich, survived.

Final Resting Place

Alexandra Georgievna was laid to rest on September 18, 1891, in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in St. Petersburg. In 1939, the Greek government, during the reign of her nephew, King George II, requested that her remains be transferred to Greece. The Soviet government granted permission, and her coffin was exhumed from the cathedral and transported to Athens on a Greek ship. She was reburied in the royal cemetery at the Tatoi Palace.

Memorial in St. Petersburg

After the transfer of her remains, the marble monument that marked her grave in the Peter and Paul Cathedral was placed back in its original location. It remains the only memorial in the cathedral that marks an empty tomb.
