Elizabeth Farnese: A Powerful Queen in Spain's History

Early Life and Marriage

Elizabeth Farnese was born as the only daughter of Odoardo Farnese, the last Duke of Parma from the Farnese family. Her mother, Dorothea Sophia of Neuburg, had been previously married to Elizabeth's uncle, Francesco Farnese. In 1714, Elizabeth married King Philip V of Spain, becoming his second wife.

Regent during Philip V's Illness

After Philip V began exhibiting signs of madness in 1724, Elizabeth took over the governance of Spain and directed its political affairs independently. She played a significant role in shaping Spanish policy during this period.

Inheriting the Farnese Lands

Upon the death of her childless uncle, Elizabeth inherited the territories and wealth of the Farnese family. These lands were subsequently incorporated into the Spanish crown.
