Early Life and Influences

Alexandra "Alex" Savior McDermott was born in Portland, Oregon on June 14, 1995. She developed an interest in songwriting at an early age, inspired by artists such as Otis Redding, Amy Winehouse, Jack White, and Adele. Her unconventional appearance and personality set her apart from her peers, leading to frequent school changes.

Discovery and Musical Debut

In September 2012, at the age of 17, Savior uploaded a cover of Angus Stone's "Big Jet Plane" to YouTube. The video caught the attention of Courtney Love, the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who remarked on its potential. By April 2013, Savior had ventured into modeling, appearing in a show for designer Erin Fetherston. She also announced plans to release her debut album.

Collaboration with Linda Perry and Columbia Records

In October 2013, Grammy-nominated rock singer Linda Perry compared Savior's potential to Fiona Apple, drawing attention to her unique vocal and songwriting abilities. After graduating high school, Savior briefly considered attending art school but ultimately chose to pursue music full-time. She signed with Columbia Records in September 2013 and relocated to Los Angeles.

Album Production and Release

Savior's debut album, originally titled "Strange Portrait," was recorded in Los Angeles from 2014 to 2015 with producers James Ford and Alex Turner. The first demo, "Risk," was featured on the soundtrack of the second season of "True Detective." Adopting the stage name Savior at Turner's suggestion, she finalized the album in June 2015. However, its release was repeatedly delayed as Savior continued to revise her material.

Singles and Music Videos

Savior's official debut single, "Shades," was released on June 17, 2016. Two more singles, "M.T.M.E." and "Mystery Girl," followed in September and November 2016. The album's title track, "Mirage," was released in February 2017. Savior also created her own low-quality music videos to accompany some of her singles.

The British music magazine NME praised Savior's "concussive, plaintive vocals" and described her as a rising star. Her debut album, "Belladonna of Sadness," was released on April 7, 2017.
