Aleksandr Xenopol: A Romanian Intellectual Luminary
Early Life and EducationAleksandr Xenopol was born in Iași, the capital of the Moldavian Principality, into a bourgeois family of officials. His elder brother was the renowned politician and writer Nicolae Xenopol. Xenopol pursued his education in Berlin and Gießen, where he studied philosophy, law, and universal history.
Academic Career
In 1883, Xenopol was appointed Professor of Romanian History at the University of Iași. His political views aligned closely with liberal-bourgeois circles.
Historical Contribution
Xenopol's seminal work, "The History of the Romanians in Trajan's Dacia," published in six volumes between 1888 and 1893, was a comprehensive synthesis of Romanian history that integrated Romanian history into the broader context of global events. He emphasized economic history and theoretical aspects of historical research.
Positivist Approach
Xenopol adhered to the principles of positivism in his historical scholarship. While acknowledging the role of the masses in certain historical events, such as the 1848 Revolutions in the Danubian Principalities and the unification of the Danubian Principalities in 1859, he ultimately viewed the people as mere instruments in the hands of enlightened leaders.
Membership in the Romanian Academy
Xenopol was elected a member of the Romanian Academy in 1895, a testament to his distinguished contributions to Romanian scholarship and historiography.
