In 1940, Alexey graduated from high school with honors and entered the Naval Medical Academy in Leningrad. His studies were interrupted by World War II, during which he participated in front-line operations and was awarded government medals for his bravery.

After graduating from the academy in 1947, Golikov was assigned as a therapist to a military hospital in the Arctic region of the Soviet Union. There, he conducted his first independent research on blood pressure in soldiers serving on the remote island of Novaya Zemlya.

1956-1967:He embarked on a fundamental study of atherosclerosis, conducting groundbreaking clinical and experimental research using radioisotopes to elucidate the role of cholesterol in the development of atherosclerotic plaques. His findings led to the development of a new animal model for testing anti-atherosclerosis drugs.

1968:Golikov defended his doctoral dissertation on lipid and cholesterol metabolism in atherosclerosis and proposed practical measures for its prevention.

1970-1984:He was appointed head of the Emergency Therapy Clinic under the 4th Main Directorate of the USSR Ministry of Health and later became head of the Department of Acute Therapeutic Diseases at the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Care in Moscow. During this period, he established a center for emergency cardiology and trained specialists in emergency and critical care.

1984-Present:Golikov's research focused on emergency conditions in cardiology, with particular attention to neurohumoral disturbances.
