Early Life and Education
Childhood and Family BackgroundAlexey Vasylevich Kartunov was born into a humble family in a picturesque village on the banks of the Terek River in Northern Ossetia. His father, Vasily, was a shepherd who perished in the war against Nazi Germany in 1942. His mother, Tatiana, worked as a milkmaid.
Education and Early Career
Despite financial struggles, Kartunov began working at the age of 12 as a shepherd. At 15, while attending evening school, he worked as a laborer at a brick factory and later as a construction worker for "Stavropolnefteestroy."
Military Service and Nuclear Explosions
Service and RankFrom 1959 to 1962, Kartunov served in the Soviet Army. He initially trained as an aircraft mechanic before serving as a conscript and eventually becoming a sergeant major at Kapustin Yar, the USSR's first secret missile test site.
Nuclear Experiments
In 1961, Kartunov experienced two atmospheric nuclear explosions while at Kapustin Yar. He later recalled witnessing two suns in the sky, one natural and one artificial.
Academic Journey
University StudiesIn 1967, Kartunov graduated with honors from the historical-philosophical faculty of Kyiv National University. He specialized in international relations and social sciences, with a proficiency in English.
Institute of History
After receiving his undergraduate degree, Kartunov pursued a graduate degree at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU). He defended his dissertation in 1975.
Teaching and Research
Teaching CareerIn 1977, Kartunov joined the Kyiv Trade and Economics Institute as a lecturer and later an associate professor. In 1987, he moved to the Institute for Advanced Training of Lecturers in Social Sciences at Kyiv National University, where he trained instructors from across the USSR and friendly foreign countries.
Research and Collaboration
Kartunov collaborated with renowned scientists and scholars, including Borys Paton, Konstantin Sytnyk, and Viktor Glushkov. He extended his knowledge by interacting with foreign researchers and visiting research institutions.

Academic AchievementsAlexey Vasylevich Kartunov holds the titles of Candidate of Historical Sciences, Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor, and Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Political Sciences. He is also a Merited Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine.
