Biography of Alexius Slav

Early Life and Family

Alexius Slav, a Bulgarian self-ruler, was born into the Asen dynasty. He was the son of Bulgarian princess Tamara, sister to Tsars Ivan Asen I, Peter IV, and Kaloyan. Slav's cousins included Tsar Boril and Sebastokrator Strez.

Conflict with Tsar Boril

During Tsar Boril's reign, Alexius Slav found himself in conflict with the ruler. Seeking support, he formed an alliance with Latin Emperor Henry of Flanders in 1208. Henry granted him the title of despot.

Rule Over the Rhodope Mountains

With his newly acquired status, Alexius Slav established control over Western and Central Rhodope and most of Eastern Macedonia. His rule encompassed numerous mountain fortresses. Initially, his residence was located at the fortress of Tsepina (1207-1212), but was later moved to the fortress of Melnik (after 1212).

Support for Monasteries

Alexius Slav is renowned for his generous patronage of monasteries, particularly the Rozhen Monastery. His contributions included a grant to the Monastery of Holy Mother of God Spileotissa near Melnik.
