Early Life and Business Ventures
Antero Salmenperä Kordelin was born in 1868 in Rauma, Finland to a seafaring family. As a young man, he pursued various business ventures, including shipping, shipbuilding, industry, and real estate. He became a prominent figure in the Finnish economic landscape, owning estates such as Mommila and Jokioinen, as well as a steam-powered sawmill in Reposaari.
Friendship with Risto Ryti
In 1910, Kordelin met the young lawyer Risto Ryti, who became his business partner. Their relationship blossomed into a close friendship that lasted for many years.
Summer Residence and Legacy
Kordelin commissioned the construction of a lavish medieval-style mansion, Kultaranta, in Naantali. He intended it as a summer retreat but only managed to spend one summer there.
Tragic Death
On November 7, 1917, Kordelin was tragically murdered by a Bolshevik sailor during the Mommila Incident. His friend Ryti witnessed the gruesome event.
Kordelin Foundation
In his will, Kordelin left the bulk of his assets to establish a foundation to support Finnish-language culture. Ryti became the executor of the will and founded the foundation, now known as the Alfred Kordelin Foundation.
Foundation's Impact
The Alfred Kordelin Foundation has awarded grants and prizes in the fields of arts, literature, and education for over a century. In 2005 alone, the foundation distributed over €3.2 million in support of these areas.
Cultural Impact
Kordelin's murder became a subject of fascination for the Finnish public. In 1973, the film "Mommilan veriteot 1917" was released, depicting the events of that fateful day. Kordelin's legacy as a prominent businessman and patron of the arts continues to inspire and resonate in Finnish society.
