Biography of Ali Benflis

Ali Benflis was born on September 8, 1944, in the city of Batna, located in the eastern part of Algeria. He grew up in a family affected by the war for independence, as both his father and brother lost their lives during the conflict.

Benflis received his secondary education in the city of Constantine and later obtained a law degree in the capital. He initially worked in the court of Blida before joining the central office of the Ministry of Justice. He held the position of prosecutor of the Republic in Batna and later became the General Prosecutor in Constantine.

In 1987, Benflis founded the Algerian League for Human Rights, demonstrating his commitment to advocating for the rights of individuals in his country. A year later, in 1988, he was appointed Minister of Justice. However, in 1991, he voluntarily resigned from his position and took a "special leave" for several years.

In 1997, Benflis was elected as a member of Parliament and became part of the Political Bureau of the ruling party, the National Liberation Front. He played a significant role in the election campaign of Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who became the president in 1999. Benflis was appointed as the Secretary-General of the President's Office and later became the Director of the Presidency's Cabinet.

Throughout his career, Benflis showed unwavering support for the policy of national reconciliation, aiming to heal the divisions in Algerian society. His contributions to the legal field, human rights advocacy, and political leadership have made him a prominent figure in Algerian politics.
