Li Qiang: A Political JourneyEarly Life and Education
Li Qiang was born in 1959 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. He earned a degree in Mechanization from Zhejiang Agriculture and Polytechnic Institute in Ningbo and later studied Economics at the Central Party School and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Early Career
Li began his career in 1976 as a factory worker before joining the Communist Youth League of China. He became a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1983 at the age of 24.
Rise Through the Ranks
Li spent nearly three decades working in his home province of Zhejiang, including under the direct leadership of Xi Jinping from 2004 to 2007. In 2002, he was appointed Secretary of the CCP's Wenzhou Municipal Committee. In 2011, he became Deputy Party Secretary of Zhejiang Province and its Governor from 2012 to 2016.
Leadership in Jiangsu and Shanghai
From 2016 to 2017, Li served as Party Secretary of Jiangsu Province. In October 2017, he was appointed Party Secretary of Shanghai, a position he held until October 2022.
Political Ascension
Li was considered a potential candidate for the Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) at the 20th CCP National Congress in 2022. However, the COVID-19 outbreak in Shanghai earlier that year raised concerns about his political prospects. Nevertheless, he was elected to the PSC at the Congress.
Premiership
On March 11, 2023, Li Qiang was appointed Premier of the State Council of China at the 4th Plenary Session of the 1st Session of the 14th National People's Congress. He became the 8th Premier of the People's Republic of China.
Anti-Corruption Stance
In his first press conference as Premier, Li declared "zero tolerance for corruption" in China, reiterating the government's commitment to combating this issue.
