Early Life and Debut

Born on August 15, 1936, in Tskhinvali, South Ossetia, Soslan Bestayev embarked on his wrestling journey in 1951 by participating in the regional Georgian wrestling championship in his hometown.

Rise to Prominence

In the same year, Bestayev moved to Vladikavkaz and joined School No. 13. His exceptional skills led him to become the champion of North Ossetia in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. In 1953, he triumphed at the USSR Youth Championship, followed by a victory at the Russian SFSR Championship.

National and International Success

Bestayev's dominance continued in 1954 when he emerged as the USSR Youth Champion and Russian SFSR Champion in the adult category. The pinnacle of his career came in 1955 when he secured the USSR Championship title.

Internationally, Bestayev made waves in 1956 by winning the World Cup in Istanbul and earning the silver medal at the USSR Championship. He also became the first Ossetian wrestler to win an Olympic medal by bagging a bronze at the Melbourne Games in the same year.

World Champion and Coaching Career

1957 marked another milestone in Bestayev's career as he clinched the World Championship title. He graduated from the Krasnoznamenny Military Institute of Physical Culture and Sports in Leningrad in 1959.

Returning to the mat, Bestayev finished second in the USSR Championship in 1962. He also achieved victories in numerous international tournaments before transitioning into a coaching role at the Central Council of the Soviet Army.
