Allan Blakeney: A Canadian Political Titan
Premier of Saskatchewan (1971-1982)Allan Blakeney served as Premier of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan from June 30, 1971, to May 8, 1982. He concurrently held the position of leader of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) from July 4, 1970, to November 7, 1987.
Early Life and Education
Blakeney was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. He earned an LLB from Dalhousie Law School and became a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where he played for the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club.
Political Career
Upon his return to Canada, Blakeney became a senior civil servant in Saskatchewan. He entered politics in 1960, holding ministerial positions in the governments of Tommy Douglas and W.S. Lloyd. As Minister of Health, he played a pivotal role in introducing universal healthcare for seniors.
Premiership
As Premier, Blakeney implemented progressive policies in areas such as education, healthcare, and social services. He also worked to promote economic development and reduce regional disparities. Blakeney's tenure was marked by both successes and challenges, including the introduction of the Crown Corporation Act and the implementation of a provincial sales tax.
Legacy
Blakeney retired from politics in 1987 and remained an active voice on public policy issues. He received a Queen's Counsel designation, an MA in Humane Letters, and an honorary Doctor of Civil Law. Blakeney passed away in 2011 after a battle with liver cancer.
