Alister John Dick was born on April 25, 1965, in Stirling, Scotland. At the tender age of 15, he joined English club Tottenham Hotspur, where he made his professional debut on February 20, 1982, at the age of 16 years and 301 days, becoming the club's youngest-ever debutant.

Dick quickly established himself as a talented midfielder for Tottenham, making 103 appearances and scoring 6 goals before departing for Ajax Amsterdam in 1986.
Ajax Amsterdam
Under the guidance of legendary manager Johan Cruyff, Dick made his Eredivisie debut on August 24, 1986, against Haarlem. He also made his European Cup debut on October 1, 1986, against Turkish club Bursaspor.
Debut and Injuries
Dick scored his first goal for Ajax on October 5, 1986, against Fortuna Sittard. However, a serious injury in a Cup Winners' Cup match against Olympiacos on October 22, 1986, sidelined him for several months.
Aftermath and Departure
After returning from injury, Dick struggled to regain his former fitness and form. He made only five appearances in the 1987/88 season and saw his playing time reduced further in the 1988/89 season. Subsequently, he left Ajax in 1988.
