Early Life and Club Career

Altair Gomes de Figueiredo, commonly known as Altair, was born in Niterói, Brazil, on January 22, 1938. He began his football career at Manufatora Club in his hometown before joining Fluminense Football Club in 1955. Altair spent his entire professional playing career at Fluminense, appearing in 551 games and scoring two goals over 16 seasons.

With Fluminense, Altair achieved success in various domestic competitions, notably winning the Rio-São Paulo Tournament twice, the Guanabara Cup twice, and the Rio de Janeiro State Championship three times.

International Career

Altair made his international debut for Brazil in 1959 and represented his country until 1966. He was a member of the Brazilian squad that won the 1962 FIFA World Cup, although he did not make an appearance during the tournament. He played two games in the 1966 World Cup.

Post-Playing Career

After retiring as a player, Altair returned to Niterói and worked in the local municipality, overseeing football-related educational projects. In the 1990s, he rejoined Fluminense and served as part of the team's football staff and worked with the youth teams. Altair also had stints as an assistant coach at Canto do Rio Club and as the head coach of the same club.

Legacy
