Early Life and Career BeginningsAlthea Henley was born on July 23, 1911, in Egypt, Pennsylvania. She began taking dance lessons while living near Allentown, Pennsylvania, and eventually made her way to New York City to pursue a career in vaudeville. While in New York, Henley performed in the Broadway impresario Florenz Ziegfeld's production of "Show Girl."
Hollywood Breakthrough
After relocating to Hollywood, Althea appeared in six films for Fox and Columbia Pictures. She was primarily typecast as a dancer or the romantic interest of other characters. Her most notable role was in Del Lord's comedy short "Movie Maniacs," which was featured in the "Three Stooges" series.
Other Notable Roles
Henley also starred in the comedy shorts "Ants in the Pantry" and "Three Little Beers." She landed supporting roles in films such as Frank Capra's "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" and "George White's Scandals."
Personal Life and Later Years
The Pennsylvania native was married several times. She first eloped with radio host Hugh Ernst in April 1934, but they soon divorced. Henley's second marriage was to British businessman Arthur Markham in April 1938, which resulted in her relocation to London, England. Her final marriage was to William Begg.
