Amar'e Stoudemire is an American professional basketball player, known for his skills as a power forward/center. He currently plays for the New York Knicks in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and has spent the first eight years of his career with the Phoenix Suns. Early Life and Career
Amar'e Stoudemire was born on November 16, 1982, in Lake Wales, Florida. His father, Hazell Stoudemire, passed away from a heart attack when Amar'e was 12 years old. His mother, Carrie Stoudemire, faced multiple incarcerations during this time, leading Amar'e to attend six different schools before graduating from Cypress Creek High School in Orlando, Florida. In an interview with Dime Magazine, Amar'e mentioned that his faith in God and the music of rapper Tupac Shakur were the only things that supported him during this difficult period.
Although he didn't start playing basketball seriously until the age of 14, Amar'e had been playing streetball with other neighborhood kids for fun. He only played two years on his high school team but quickly became the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Nike Summer League. He was offered a scholarship to play for the University of Memphis, but instead, he decided to pursue a career in the NBA, seeing it as an opportunity to provide financial stability for his family.
NBA Career
On the 2002 NBA Draft, the Phoenix Suns selected Amar'e Stoudemire as the 9th overall pick.
