Early Life and Basketball Beginnings
Olivier Saint-Jean, later known as Tariq Abdul-Wahad, was born into a family of Guyanese immigrants in France. As the son of a professional basketball player, he inherited a passion for the sport. He honed his skills with the Évreux club before moving to the United States in 1993.
College Career
Abdul-Wahad initially joined the University of Michigan but later transferred to San Jose State University. At San Jose State, he displayed remarkable scoring prowess. His jersey number, #3, was retired by the university in 2002 in recognition of his contributions.
NBA Draft and Career
In the 1997 NBA Draft, Abdul-Wahad made history as the first French player to be selected. He was drafted by the Sacramento Kings with the 11th overall pick. Despite being a promising defensive player, his NBA career was hampered by injuries. He played for the Kings, Orlando Magic, Denver Nuggets, and Dallas Mavericks over six seasons.
Conversion to Islam
In 1997, Abdul-Wahad embraced the Islamic faith and adopted the name Tariq Abdul-Wahad. "Tariq" translates to "morning star," while "Abdul-Wahad" means "servant of the one God."
Post-NBA Career
Following his NBA retirement in 2005, Abdul-Wahad attempted a comeback in Italy with Fortitudo Bologna. However, his contract was not renewed due to unsatisfactory performance. He also represented the French national team at the European Championships in 1999 and 2003, where his team finished in fourth place both times.
