Ambrosius Holbein the Elder: A German Renaissance Master

Early Life and Artistic Roots

Ambrosius Holbein the Elder was born in Augsburg, Germany, to Hans Holbein the Elder, a renowned painter during the transition from Gothic to Renaissance art. His brother, Hans Holbein the Younger, also became a notable painter. The Holbein family workshop provided Ambrosius with his initial training in painting, as well as exposure to jewelry making and engraving.

Apprenticeship and Early Career

In 1515, Ambrosius resided in Stein-am-Rhein, Switzerland, where he worked as an apprentice in Hans Holbein of Isny's workshop on the murals of the Saint George Monastery. He later enrolled in the painters' guild of Basel in 1517 and became a citizen of the city in 1518.

Collaboration and Artistic Output

In Basel, Ambrosius shared a workshop with his brother, Hans. They received numerous commissions from Basel book publishers for engravings, as well as requests for portraits and religious paintings.

Legacy and Influence

Ambrosius Holbein the Elder's exact date of death is uncertain, but it is believed to be around 1519. While his artistic output may not have been as prolific as that of his younger brother, his influence as an innovator and teacher laid the foundation for the Holbein family's enduring legacy in the art world.
