Saint Anne An Xin: A Martyr Amidst Persecution

Anti-Christian Sentiment in China

During the latter half of the 19th century, China witnessed intense anti-Christian sentiment. This hostility erupted in 1899-1901 during the Boxer Rebellion, which targeted Christians across the country.

Arrest and Martyrdom

On July 11, 1900, Anne An Xin was apprehended by rebels along with her son's wife, Mary An Guo; her grandson's wife, Anne An Jiao; and her granddaughter, Mary An Linhua. The rebels demanded that the women renounce their Christian faith. However, the women remained steadfast in their beliefs. Consequently, they were led outside the village and executed.

Beatification and Canonization

Beatification

Anne An Xin was beatified on April 17, 1955, by Pope Pius XII, along with French missionary Leon Mangin.

Canonization

On October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized An Xin as a saint, along with 120 other Chinese martyrs.

Feast Day

In the Catholic Church, Saint Anne An Xin's feast day is celebrated on July 9th.
