Early Life and Vocation
Gregorio Maria Grassi was born on November 2, 1848, and joined the Franciscan Order on that same day. Ordained a priest on August 17, 1856, Gregorio's missionary zeal led him to China in 1860.
Missionary Work in China
Upon arriving in Taiyuan, Gregorio Maria became involved in charitable work, establishing an orphanage for orphaned children. In 1876, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Shaanxi. As a bishop, he continued his missionary endeavors, founding a seminary in Taiyuan and embarking on numerous missionary journeys throughout China.
Martyrdom during the Boxer Rebellion
During the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1900, Gregorio Maria Grassi faced fierce persecution for his Christian faith. Arrested on the orders of the governor of Shaanxi, he was held captive along with two fellow bishops, seven seminarians, and ten lay Catholics. On July 9, 1900, Gregorio Maria Grassi was executed alongside his 27 fellow believers.
Beatification and Canonization
Gregorio Maria Grassi's heroic sacrifice and unwavering faith led to his beatification on November 27, 1946, by Pope Pius XII. On October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Gregorio Maria Grassi, recognizing him as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.
