Early Life and EducationBorn in Madrid, Ana Botella García is a Spanish politician who holds a law degree from the Complutense University of Madrid.
Political Career
In 2007, Botella became a member of the Madrid City Council, focusing on environmental and transportation issues. On December 27, 2011, she was elected mayor of Madrid by the majority vote of the People's Party faction. This made her the first woman to hold the position. She succeeded Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, who was appointed Minister of Justice in Mariano Rajoy's government.
Personal Life
Since 1977, Botella has been married to former Prime Minister of Spain, José María Aznar. They have three children together.
Political Views
Like her husband, Botella is a member of the conservative wing of the People's Party. She criticized the Socialists' decision to legalize same-sex marriage, earning her the nickname "Queen of Apples and Pears" in the press.
