Ana Brnabić: A Pioneer in Serbian Politics
Early Life and EducationAna Brnabić was born in Belgrade, Serbia. She graduated from high school in 1994 and went on to pursue higher education abroad. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Northwood University in Michigan, USA, in 1998. She later obtained an MBA degree from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom.
Business and Consulting Career
Upon returning to Serbia in 2001, Brnabić worked in the EU-funded Agricultural Development Program. From 2002 to 2011, she was associated with the United States Agency for International Development. She then joined Continental Wind Serbia in 2011, becoming its director in 2013.
Involvement in Local Governance
Brnabić has been actively involved in local governance and economic development initiatives. In 2006, she co-founded the National Alliance for Local Economic Development (NALED), and she served as its vice president from 2013 to 2016. In 2016, she became the organization's president.
Entry into Politics
In 2007, Brnabić was appointed as an advisor to the Serbian government's Coordinating Body for the Municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac, and Medvedja. In 2016, she was chosen by then Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić as the Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government.
Serbia's First Female Prime Minister
Following the 2017 presidential election in which Vučić was re-elected, Brnabić was proposed to lead the Serbian government. On June 15, 2017, she was formally appointed Prime Minister by President Vučić. Brnabić is the first woman to hold this position in Serbia's history. She is also the country's first openly lesbian prime minister.
The East West Bridge
Brnabić is a member of the Belgrade-based East West Bridge (EWB), which is part of the Trilateral Commission. This organization promotes cooperation and dialogue between Southeast Europe and the rest of the world.
