Biography of Ana Maria Popescu

Ana Maria Popescu is a Romanian épée fencer, world champion, European champion, and vice-champion of the Olympic Games in team events. She was born in Bucharest in 1984. At the age of 10, she started practicing fencing and became the Romanian champion in her age group just six months later. At the age of 13, she began training at the Youth Olympic Center. After completing her bachelor's degree at Craiova University, she received an offer to study in the United States but chose to stay in her homeland.

Career Highlights

In 2001, Popescu joined the army sports club and has been competing for them since then. In 2002, she won a bronze medal at the World Championships. In 2004, she participated in the Olympic Games in Athens but finished in 16th place. In 2006, she became the European champion. In 2008, she won a gold and silver medal at the European Championships and became the silver medalist at the Olympic Games in Beijing. In 2009, she once again became the European champion. In 2010, she won her first gold medal at the World Championships. In 2011, she won gold and bronze medals at the World Championships and gold and bronze medals at the European Championships. In 2012, she became the silver medalist at the European Championships and finished 11th at the Olympic Games in London in individual épée. In 2013, she won gold and silver medals at the European Championships and a bronze medal at the World Championships. In 2014, she once again became the European champion. In 2015, she won the European Championships, became the silver medalist in team épée at the World Championships, and won the European Games. In 2016, she became the vice-champion of Europe in individual épée and won a bronze medal in team events.
