Early Life and Military Career

Anastasio Somoza Debayle was born on December 5, 1925, the youngest son of Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza García. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and held various positions in the Nicaraguan National Guard, becoming its commander-in-chief in 1956.

Presidency

In 1967, at the age of 42, Somoza became president following the death of his brother, Luis Somoza. He ruled Nicaragua as a dictator, suppressing democratic forces and maintaining close ties with the United States. He was "re-elected" in 1974.

Challenges to his Rule

Despite relying on U.S. military and economic aid, as well as a well-trained National Guard, Somoza faced growing opposition. The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) emerged as a formidable threat, supported by Cuba and the Catholic Church. Additionally, the Carter administration in the United States withdrew support due to Somoza's human rights violations and economic mismanagement.

Collapse of his Regime and Flight to Exile

In January 1978, the assassination of an opposition newspaper editor sparked an armed uprising. Somoza pleaded for U.S. intervention but was ignored. By June 1979, the FSLN was gaining ground, and on July 17, Somoza fled Nicaragua, ordering the exhumation of his father's and brother's bodies for burial in the United States.

Assassination and Legacy

Somoza was sentenced to death in absentia and assassinated in Asunción, Paraguay, on September 17, 1980. His dictatorship left Nicaragua with widespread poverty, a massive debt, and a legacy of political instability that continues to shape the country's history.
