Biography of Enrique Geyer
Enrique Geyer was born on May 13, 1928 in the Nicaraguan city of Masaya. He received his education at the College of Lescano Iglesia Parroquial, Salesian College, St. Louis University in Missouri (USA), and the Central American Institute of Business Management in Managua, Nicaragua.
Successful Agro-industrial Ventures
Geyer went on to lead a number of successful agro-industrial enterprises, including sugar, coffee, and cotton plantations. However, in 1979, after the expropriation of private property by the Sandinista government led by Daniel Ortega, he turned to politics.
Leadership in Agricultural and Industrial Organizations
He assumed leadership roles in several organizations that advocated for the interests of private owners, including the National Union of Agricultural Producers, the National Chamber of Industry, and the Supreme Council of Private Entrepreneurs.
Political Career and Presidency
In 1985, Geyer became known for his active criticism of the regime and was arrested, but was soon released. In 1990, he aspired to the leadership of a coalition of opposition parties and movements in the run-up to the presidential elections. In 1996, he became the Vice President under President Arnoldo Aleman, but resigned in 2000 to run for the presidency from the ruling party of Liberal Constitutionalists.
Election and Term as President
Geyer won the presidential elections in 2001, receiving 56.3% of the votes. On January 10, 2002, he was inaugurated as the president of Nicaragua. Throughout his term, Geyer focused on promoting economic growth and improving the living conditions of the Nicaraguan people.
