Saint Anastasios the Martyr
Saint Anastasios, revered as a martyr in the Orthodox Church, is commemorated on August 29 in the Bulgarian Church and on August 8 in the Greek Orthodox Church.
Early Life and Vocation
Anastasios was a young man who earned a living as an armorer or a clothing merchant. At the age of 20, he traveled to the city of Thessaloniki in search of work. He joined an apprenticeship under a master who ordered him to wear Turkish clothing to avoid paying a market tax imposed on Christian merchants.
The Conflict
While Anastasios obeyed his master's instructions, he faced a moral dilemma when he was asked to recite the Muslim declaration of faith at the market. Faithfully adhering to his Christian beliefs, he refused, earning the wrath of the authorities.
Imprisonment and Torture
Anastasios was apprehended and thrown into prison, where he endured severe torture. He was accused of "blaspheming against Muhammad" and subsequently sentenced to hanging.
Martyrdom
As Anastasios was being led to the execution site, his wounds proved fatal, and he passed away before reaching his destination. His remains were later recovered and interred with veneration.
