Childhood and Early Education

Anatoly Gorbunovs was born in 1942 in Latvia. He grew up in the Latgale region and attended local schools for his primary and secondary education.

University and Career

In 1970, Gorbunovs graduated from the Riga Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with a degree in engineering. He subsequently worked in various positions at a state farm, a design institute, and RPI.

Involvement in Politics

In 1969, Gorbunovs joined the Komsomol, the youth wing of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the first secretary of the Kirow District Committee of the Lenin Communist Youth League in Riga.

CPSU Official

In 1974, Gorbunovs moved to the Communist Party of Latvia (CPL). He held various positions within the party, including head of department and first secretary of the Kirow District Committee in Riga. In 1982, he became secretary of the Riga City Committee of the CPL.

Gorbachev Reforms

In 1984, Gorbunovs became the head of the administrative organs department of the CPL. During this period, Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms began to take shape, leading to greater openness and political liberalization.

Presidency of the Supreme Soviet

In 1988, Gorbunovs was appointed Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR. He initially supported the Popular Front of Latvia, which advocated for independence from the USSR.

Independence and the Establishment of Latvia

Following the restoration of Latvia's independence in 1991, Gorbunovs served as the nominal head of state until Guntis Ulmanis was elected president in 1993.

Political Career in Independent Latvia

Gorbunovs co-founded the Latvian Way party in 1993. He served as a member of the Saeima, Latvia's parliament, for five terms. He held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Environment and Regional Development, Minister of Transport, and Minister of Economy.

Later Career

In 2003, Gorbunovs became the chairman of JSC "Latvijas Valsts Meži" (Latvian State Forests). He was awarded the Order of the Three Stars in 2005 and the Medal of the Barricades of 1991.

Personal Life

Anatoly Gorbunovs is married and has one son.
