Early Life and Education
Alexander D. Voronin was born in 1932. In 1955, he graduated with honors from the Soil Science Department of the Biological and Soil Science Faculty of Moscow State University (MSU).
Fieldwork and Research
Voronin participated in the Сталинградская (Volgograd) research expedition on shelterbelt afforestation. In 1960, he defended his dissertation on the composition and properties of particle size fractions of soils.
International Collaboration and Scientific Breakthroughs
In 1962, Voronin began a research fellowship at Aberdeen University in the United Kingdom. There, he shifted his focus to thermodynamics of soil moisture. His work laid the foundation for structural-functional hydrophysics, a new field in soil physics. He established principles linking soil solid structure to the energy state of soil moisture at different humidities.
Academic Career and Legacy
Voronin became the head of the Department of Soil Physics and Land Reclamation at MSU in 1977 and served as the dean of the Faculty of Soil Science from 1989 to 1995. He taught courses on soil physics and advanced topics in soil science. He supervised 29 Ph.D. candidates and five doctoral students.
Leadership and Recognition
Voronin served as chairman of the Soil Physics Commission of the All-Union Society of Soil Scientists (1970-1990) and vice-president of the Russian Society of Soil Scientists (from 1992). He was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1993.
