Biography of Jean Emmanuel Gilibert

Jean Emmanuel Gilibert was a French physician, botanist, and biologist. He studied medicine in Montpellier from 1760 to 1764 and obtained his diploma. Afterward, he established his practice in Lyon and spent his free time collecting a herbarium of local flora.

Establishment of Botanical Gardens

Gilibert founded a botanical garden in the Brotto district of Lyon, which unfortunately fell into disrepair due to poor administration. In the 1770s, at the request of Antonius Tizengaus, Gilibert traveled to Grodno to organize a medical school. There, he established a botanical garden, which became one of the finest in Europe by the end of the 18th century. In 1775, he opened the first institution of higher education in modern-day Belarus, the Medical Academy. The academy had a pharmacy (now the Grodno Pharmacy Museum) adjacent to an apothecary garden where medicinal and aromatic plants were cultivated.

Exploration and Work

Alongside his students, Gilibert studied the nature of Belarus and Lithuania, collecting a herbarium in the vicinity of Grodno, Brest, Bialystok, Nesvizh, Novogrudok, and Vilnius. His efforts resulted in the publication of "Flora lithaunica inchoata," which included descriptions of 95 species of medicinal plants, information about their flowering time, discussions on their medicinal properties, and their everyday applications. He also taught at the Main Vilnius School.

Later Years and Legacy

Gilibert returned to Lyon in 1783 but was arrested by the Jacobins during the French Revolution in 1793 due to his affiliation with the Girondists. However, he was released in the same year. In honor of Jean Emmanuel Gilibert, the main city park in Grodno was named Park Giliberta, situated on the site of the garden he established. In the early 21st century, a bronze sculpture of the French scientist was installed at the central entrance of the park. Additionally, a plant genus, Gilibertia Ruiz & Pav., from the Araliaceae family, is named after him, known as Dendropanax Decne. & Planch. in modern nomenclature.
