Anatoly Pavlovich Gritsenko: A Life in Politics
Early Life and Military ServiceAnatoly Pavlovich Gritsenko was born in the village of Chistopolye, Crimean Oblast on May 27, 1957. Prior to becoming involved in politics, he worked as a locksmith and in the navy.
Entry into Politics
Gritsenko's political career began in 1987 when he became chairman of the executive committee of the Chistopolye Village Council. In 1995, he was elected to the Supreme Council of Crimea and held the position of chairman from 1997 to 1998.
Leadership in Crimea
After serving as head of the Chistopolye Village Council from 1998 to 2001, Gritsenko was elected chairman of the Lenin District State Administration. He later became first deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of Crimea and returned as chairman of the Supreme Council of Crimea from 2006 to 2010.
Herson Oblast Governor
In March 2010, Gritsenko was appointed chairman of the Kherson Oblast State Administration by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. He held this post until June 2010.
Legal Troubles and Party Affiliation
Gritsenko was a member of the Party of Regions, and served as chairman of its Lenin branch until 2011. In January 2011, he was arrested on charges of abuse of power for allegedly illegally seizing land during his tenure as chairman of the Lenin District State Administration. He was convicted of this offense and spent over a year in jail. However, his conviction was overturned in 2015.
After the Crimean referendum in March 2014, Gritsenko joined the A Just Russia party. He ran for the State Council of the Republic of Crimea on the party's ticket, but was removed from the race due to his outstanding conviction. He subsequently left the party.
Education and Recognition
Gritsenko earned a degree in economics from the Crimean Agricultural Institute in 1989 and a master's degree in public administration from the Kharkiv Regional Institute of Public Administration in 2007. He also holds a Ph.D. in economics and a law degree from the Kherson Legal Institute of the Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs.
Gritsenko has received numerous awards and honors, including the Ukrainian Orthodox Church's Order of Saints Anthony and Theodosius of Pechersk, the International Prize named after P. Orlyk, and the Order of Merit, Third Class.
Family
Gritsenko is married to Olga Gritsenko and has two children, Artem (born 1982) and Alina (born 1994).
