Agustín Gamarra: A Peruvian Military Leader and President
Early Life and Military CareerAgustín Gamarra was born on August 27, 1785, in Cusco, Peru. He chose a military career and fought against the Spanish royalists from a young age. He served under Andrés de Santa Cruz during the Peruvian War of Independence and participated in the decisive Battle of Ayacucho.
First Presidency and Presidency
After the defeat of José de la Mar, Gamarra briefly became president of Peru in 1829. During his first presidency, he rejected the 1828 constitution, which sought to limit the power of the executive branch. He also faced numerous rebellions, which he suppressed by personally leading expeditions.
Annexation of Bolivia and Second Presidency
Gamarra's political ambition lay in annexing Bolivia, which had been separated from Peru in 1824. He proposed this idea to Santa Cruz, the president of Bolivia at the time. However, it met with limited support. In 1835, Gamarra opposed the creation of the Peru-Bolivian Confederation and led an armed resistance with Chilean support. His victory in the Battle of Yungay resulted in the collapse of the confederation.
Second Presidency and Death
During his second presidency, Gamarra faced secessionist movements and external threats. In 1841, he invaded Bolivia with the intention of annexing it. However, he was defeated and killed by Bolivian forces in the Battle of Ingavi on November 18, 1841.
