Early Life and Escape from Romania
Anca Pop, a Canadian-Romanian singer, was born on October 22, 1984, in a small town in Romania. As communist ideology took hold, her family fled the country on an inflatable raft across the freezing Danube River, with Anca being only three years old.
In a Facebook post, Anca revealed that her mother, despite not knowing how to swim, gathered their belongings in the middle of the night to escape the communist regime to Yugoslavia. Despite the risk of being shot, fate smiled upon Anca and her parents that night. After seven months in Yugoslavia, they reached Canada, where they claimed political refugee status.
Immigration and Early Artistic Pursuits
Anca's parents later returned to Romania, while she remained in Vancouver under the care of her grandparents. In addition to singing in school and a local church choir, Anca participated in sports, took drawing lessons, and was an avid reader.
Musical Career
Anca's passion for music developed later in life. "The idea of being a musician came much later, when I was around 18," she wrote. Her unique musical style blended Balkan and pop influences.
In 2012, Anca released her debut album, "Jealous Monster," with the support of Serbian composer Goran Bregovic. She had previously collaborated with Bregovic on his thirteenth studio album, "Champagne for Gypsies."
Singles and Breakthrough Success

The single was also released in beach and Romanian Playboy versions. Anca appeared on the cover of the magazine's July-August issue.

Personal Life and Spirituality
Anca resided in Bucharest, Romania, prior to her passing. She was a spiritual seeker who traveled to Peru, India, and Thailand in search of enlightenment. Despite being in a relationship, she expressed her desire to remain unmarried on the talk show "Totul pentru dragoste."
Tragic End
On December 17, 2018, Anca Pop tragically passed away at the age of 34. Her car lost control and plummeted into the Danube River, resulting in her drowning. The cause of the accident remains unknown.
