Former Player with Long Coaching Journey
Head Coach of UNICS KazanOn Monday, 44-year-old Italian coach Simone Pianigiani was announced as the new head coach of UNICS Kazan. The three-year deal marks the third Italian coach to lead the Russian Premier League club, following Ettore Messina and Sergio Scariolo.
Pianigiani, who previously spent four successful seasons with Italy's Pallacanestro Cantù, will replace Stanislav Eremin, who took over midway through the 2012/13 season after the dismissal of Aco Petrovic.
Intentions and Goals
Pianigiani expressed his excitement about the opportunity to coach in Kazan, calling it an "ideal option" for his career. He acknowledged the team's strong foundation and stated his intention to "slightly adjust the direction" to enhance their performance.
Transfer Plans and Assistant Coach
Regarding transfer plans, Pianigiani indicated that UNICS would only target players who prioritize team success over money. He remained noncommittal on specific players, including Bobby Brown of Mens Sana Siena, but hinted that the club would aim for players who are willing to sacrifice for the team.
As for his assistant coach during the preseason while he is with the Greek national team, Pianigiani confirmed that former Soviet player Valdemaras Chomičius is among the candidates for the role. Chomičius is known for his exceptional playing and coaching career.

Pianigiani's journey as a coach began at the age of 19, despite his limited success as a player. His passion for the sport drove him to pursue coaching, and he gradually worked his way up the ranks, starting with youth teams and eventually leading more prominent clubs.
Pianigiani's multicultural background, with Italian, Croatian, American, and Montenegrin heritage, has instilled in him a deep appreciation for different cultures. He is also an avid foodie, particularly enjoying the cuisines of the former Yugoslavia and the Tatar region of Russia.
Pianigiani is married with two young sons, who will join him in Kazan despite concerns about the harsh Russian winters.
