Player Career

Vicente joined Real Madrid at the age of 18, thanks to Santiago Bernabeu. However, it took him six years to make it to the first team, as he had to transition from being a forward to a midfielder. He was known for his excellent dribbling skills, resilience in duels, and a fight with Kevin Keegan in a Champions League match against Hamburg. His best match was during the 1977/1978 season against Barcelona, where Madrid won and Vicente became the hero of the match. He was not a highly demanded player in the Spanish national team and only occasionally played as a starter or substitute. However, he was highly respected by his teammates at Real Madrid. His love and loyalty to the club, as well as his good relationship with the club's management, were the main reasons why he was invited to become a coach in 1984. Vicente wasted no time while playing for Real Madrid and obtained his coaching license at the age of 27.

Coaching Career

No former youth team coaches had achieved what Vicente del Bosque accomplished during his three and a half years at Real Madrid. He won two Spanish league titles, two Champions Leagues, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup with his first professional club. After these victories, Vicente moved to Turkish club Besiktas, where he did not achieve much success and even sued the club to receive the money owed to him according to his contract. In 2006, he was offered the position of the Mexican national team coach with a salary of 2 million dollars, but Vicente declined as there were elections for the president of Real Madrid at that time. If Juan Palacios, whom Vicente supported, had become the club's president, Vicente would have become the coach of Real Madrid. However, Ramon Calderon won the club's presidential elections, and Vicente's chances of working at the "Royal Club" vanished. After Euro 2008, he was offered the position of the coach of the Spanish national team, replacing the triumphant Luis Aragones. His debut with the Spanish national team came in a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, where his team won with a minimal advantage of 1-0.
