Andreas Ivanschitz: Austrian Midfielder
Early Life and Professional DebutAndreas Ivanschitz was born into a Gradišće Croat family in Burgenland, Austria. He began his football career at Baumgarten, where he spent nine years. In 1998, scouts from Rapid Wien noticed his talent, and he signed his first professional contract at age 16. Ivanschitz made his debut for Rapid Wien in a cup match against Ranshofen in 1999 and in the Austrian Bundesliga against Salzburg in 2000.
Success with Rapid Wien and Austria
Over the next few years, Ivanschitz established himself as a key player for Rapid Wien, scoring 27 goals in 177 matches. He helped the club win the Austrian Bundesliga title in 2005 and was named Austrian Footballer of the Year in 2003. He also captained the Austrian national team for the first time in 2003 at age 19, becoming the youngest captain in the team's history.
Move Abroad and Return to Austria
In 2006, Ivanschitz joined Red Bull Salzburg but moved on loan to Panathinaikos in Greece six months later. He eventually signed a permanent deal with Panathinaikos in 2008. In 2009, he joined Mainz 05 in the German Bundesliga, initially on loan before the club acquired his full rights in 2011.
National Team Career
Ivanschitz has represented Austria internationally since his debut in 2003. He has played extensively for the team, making over 100 appearances and scoring numerous goals. Ivanschitz is known for his leadership skills and is highly respected by Austrian fans. He continues to play for Austria and wears the number 10 shirt.
Later Career and Legacy
After leaving Mainz in 2015, Ivanschitz played for Seattle Sounders FC in Major League Soccer before returning to Austria to join Wolfsberger AC in 2018. He retired from professional football in 2020. Ivanschitz is remembered as one of the most successful Austrian footballers of his generation, having won numerous titles and representing his country with distinction.
