Andrey Andreyevich Igelström

Early Life and Education

Andrey Andreyevich Igelström was born into a distinguished Baltic German family. His father, also named Andrey Andreyevich, was a general and a brother of the Decembrist Konstantin Grigoryevich Igelström. Igelström received a military education.

Involvement in Socialist Movement and Exile

In 1885, Igelström became involved in the socialist organization "Proletariat" in Warsaw. As a result, he was arrested and sentenced to exile in Siberia. In 1889, his punishment was commuted to demotion to the rank of private.

Career in Finland

After his release, Igelström relocated to Finland. He became the head of the Russian library at the University of Helsinki and a lecturer in Russian at the Helsinki Polytechnic Institute. He wrote numerous articles about Finland for various Russian publications, including "Vestnik Evropy," "Obrazovanie," and "Narodnoye Khozyaystvo."

Literary Contributions

Igelström also published works on Russian literature and life in Finnish publications, particularly in the scholarly journal "Valvoja." He collaborated with Professor I. Mandelstam to compile a Swedish-Russian dictionary, published in Helsinki in 1905.

Legacy

Igelström's son, Andrey Andreyevich Igelström Jr. (1886-1939), became a history teacher in Moscow. Igelström's contributions to the study of Finland and Russian literature continue to be significant.
