Andrey Karako: A Versatile Belarusian Actor on Stage and Screen
Early Life and Family BackgroundAndrey Karako was born in Gomel, Belarus, to a family deeply rooted in the world of theater. His father, Vladislav Vladislavovich, was an actor at the local drama theater, while his mother, Kristina Konstantinovna, continues to lead the local troupe to this day. Despite his family's theatrical lineage, Andrey initially did not aspire to follow in their footsteps. Having grown up behind the scenes and witnessed both the glamour and hardships of the profession, he opted for a different path.
From Naval Engineer to Actor
After graduating from high school, Karako moved to Sevastopol and enrolled in the Higher Naval Engineering School. However, upon the collapse of the Soviet Union, he found himself facing a choice: to remain in the school and swear allegiance to Ukraine or withdraw. Choosing to return home, Andrey enrolled at the Belarusian State University of Transport but quickly discovered that engineering was not his true calling. He left the university and enlisted in the military.
A Turning Point: Embracing Theater
After his military service, Karako stumbled upon an opportunity that would shape his life forever. The renowned Belarusian writer Vladimir Korotkevich was recruiting a group of five students for an experimental program that would combine acting classes at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts with performances at the Gomel Drama Theater. Karako auditioned and became one of the lucky five, finally realizing his passion for acting.
Stage Presence and Directing Debut
Karako graced the Gomel stage until 2008, during which time he also pursued a second degree in directing. He directed two plays at his home theater: the children's fairy tale "Little Baba Yaga" and the philosophical production "The Magic Violin." Additionally, Karako performed on stage in Moscow, appearing in one-act plays at the Meyerhold Center and the Art-Project.
Film Breakthrough and Prolific Career
Andrey Karako's cinematic debut came in 2005, with small roles in both Belarusian and Russian productions. Gradually, his recognizability grew, and he began to be cast in more prominent roles. His first lead role was in the crime thriller "I Am a Detective." Ironically, one of the scenes in this film presented an unexpected challenge: Karako was required to smoke a cigarette and drink a beer in a single take. While the beer was non-alcoholic, the director demanded more than 10 takes, prompting Andrey to vow to quit smoking and keep his promise.
Karako has consistently accepted all offered scripts, regardless of genre or role size. As a result, he has appeared in over 75 films in the past 10 years. He has primarily starred in television series, notable among them the historical "Son of the Father of the People," the crime melodrama "Trap for a Star," and the action-packed "Mentovskie Voiny" (Cop Wars), in which he played the ruthless careerist with the nickname "Prince."
In 2009, Karako landed the lead role in the film "Trepanation of the Heart" and the detective series "Court," a sequel to "Your Honor." In 2014, he portrayed banker Igor Glukhovsky in the melodrama "Zvezdy Svet Metam" (Stars Shine for Everyone). The film depicts an idyllic family shattered when Igor is imprisoned for theft and his wife discovers his long-held affair.
Personal Life: Divorce and Fatherhood
Andrey Karako keeps his private life under wraps, rarely granting interviews. It is known that he divorced his wife. However, he enthusiastically discusses his son, 14-year-old Yegor, who plays hockey professionally for the Minsk youth team "Yunost" and has won international championships in the Czech Republic. Following his parents' divorce, Yegor lives with his mother in Minsk, but Andrey Karako remains deeply involved in his son's life, evidently expressing not only love but also respect and immense pride.
Karako was involved in another romantic relationship, which ended tragically. No children were born from this relationship. Currently, Karako's heart remains open to finding a partner who would provide a reliable support system for both him and his loved ones.
Recent Work and Future Prospects
In 2017, Karako played 12 supporting roles, none of which were in his native Belarus. His only Belarusian film that year was the four-part melodrama "Eto Bylo u Morya" (It Was by the Sea). In the crime thriller "Cuba," Karako portrayed Rinat Safiulin, a role that was not even credited in the film. He played Roman Arkadyevich in the melodrama "Odinocha" (Lone Wolf) and a businessman in the medical melodrama "Akusherka" (Midwife). In the melodrama "Devushka s Glazami Tsveta Neba" (Girl with Eyes the Color of Heaven), he appeared as a pilot named Viktor.
In December 2017, Karako played Mikhail, the first husband of the protagonist Inga (Natalya Rychkova) in the detective film "Tri v Odnom" (Three in One). Inga works for a breakup agency called "Chao-Kacao" and inadvertently becomes a witness to a tragedy, intertwining her fate with a criminal investigation. While this detective film offered Karako only a minor role, the character became a recurring one.
In the sequel "Tri v Odnom-2" (Three in One-2), Karako's role takes center stage. When Inga's new boyfriend is murdered, her former husbands become suspects in the investigation.
Karako also appeared in the melodramas "Mest kak Lekarstvo" (Revenge as Medicine) and "Khochu Byt Schastlivoy" (I Want to Be Happy), as well as the crime film "Zalozhnitza" (Hostage). His final film of 2017, the holiday melodrama "Novogodny Passazhir" (New Year's Passenger), was released on January 1, 2018 on the STS channel. In this film, Karako played a cameo role as a police officer.
In 2018, Karako appeared in the mystical melodrama "Chernaya Krov" (Black Blood), a Russian-Belarusian co-production, and the Ukrainian melodrama "Vinograd" (Vineyard). He also began working on the Russian film "Flamingo."
