Childhood and Early Life

Andrei Rubin, a renowned Latvian footballer, was born on November 26, 1978, in Riga, the capital of the Latvian SSR. His childhood was marked by adversity, as he lost his father at a young age and became entangled with the wrong crowd during his teenage years. At the age of 15, he was incarcerated. In his autobiography, "I Only Sat Once," published in 2022, Rubin recounted his six-month stint in Riga Central Prison and the transformative role football played in his rehabilitation.

Football Career

After honing his skills in Latvian football, Rubin embarked on his professional career at the age of 19 with Osters IF, a Swedish top-flight club. A year later, he returned to his homeland and joined Skonto, with whom he won three Latvian league titles and two Latvian cups. In 1998, at the age of 19, Rubin made his international debut for Latvia in a friendly match against Tunisia.

Rubin's career gained international recognition when he joined English club Crystal Palace in 2000, alongside Latvian goalkeeper Aleksandrs Kolinko. While he had memorable performances, including scoring the winning goal against Liverpool in a cup tie, Rubin ultimately struggled to settle in England. In 2003, he moved to Russian club Shinnik, where he enjoyed two successful seasons, before joining FC Spartak Moscow in 2005. Despite limited playing time at Spartak, he became a Russian Championship silver medalist.

After returning to Shinnik in 2006, Rubin was loaned to Latvian club Liepajas Metalurgs for half a season. He concluded his playing career in Azerbaijan, winning the domestic league and cup with Inter Baku and earning a bronze medal with FK Karabakh.

Coaching Career

In March 2013, Rubin retired from playing and began coaching youth teams in the Latvian town of Ikskile. In 2014, he joined the coaching staff of FK Ogre. After working at the Riga Cup tournament in 2019, Rubin became the head coach of FK Auda in Kekava, a team in the Latvian First League.

Personal Life and Death

Details of Rubin's personal life are limited. After retiring, he faced financial difficulties due to unwise investments. His deteriorating financial situation and a battle with alcoholism led to depression. Despite these challenges, Rubin was assisted by colleagues and the Latvian Football Federation in his recovery.

In the latter stages of his life, Rubin sold his house and had his phone disconnected due to unpaid bills. He also suffered a broken femur, requiring surgery in November 2019.

Andrei Rubin passed away unexpectedly on August 3, 2022, at the age of 43. The cause of his death remains undisclosed. His legacy as a dedicated footballer and a symbol of redemption continues to inspire aspiring athletes and fans alike.
