Lieutenant General, Order of St. George Recipient
Commanding the Siege of IzmailIn 1809, Lieutenant General Ivan Osipovich Zass commanded troops during the Russo-Turkish War and forced the surrender of the fortress of Izmail.
Crossing the Danube and Battling the Turks
On May 19, 1810, Zass crossed the Danube River below Turtukai, captured the fortress, and moved towards Ruschuk. However, he was unable to take the city. On June 13, 1810, he was awarded the Order of St. George, 3rd class, for his achievements.
Leading Troops in Wallachia and Serbia
Appointed commander of troops in Wallachia and Serbia, Zass captured Kladovo and defeated Turkish forces under Ismail Bey in 1811.
Ill Health and Return to Active Duty
Due to illness, Zass retired in late 1811. However, he returned to the army in November 1812 as commander of cavalry in the 3rd Western Army.
Pursuing the French and Participating in Battles
Zass participated in the pursuit of the retreating French forces and distinguished himself during the siege of Thorn. He also fought in the Battle of Bautzen.
Retirement and Legacy
In June 1813, Zass again retired due to health problems. He remained in retirement until his death in 1814.
Son's Military Service and Death
Zass's son, Major General Pyotr Andreyevich Zass, served under Grand Duke Constantine Pavlovich. He died during the Polish Revolution in Warsaw in November 1830.
