Dmitriy Gurko
Vladimir Gurko: A Distinguished Russian General and Military Intelligence Officer
Vladimir Gurko was a prominent Russian military commander who served as a general-major and an officer in the Russian military intelligence.
Early Life and Education
Born to General Field Marshal Ivan Vasilievich Gurko, Vladimir received his education at the prestigious Page Corps and the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff.
Military Career
Gurko began his military service in the Leib Guard Uhlan Regiment. He distinguished himself during the Russo-Japanese War and was later appointed military agent in Switzerland in 1908.
World War I
With the outbreak of World War I, Gurko actively participated in the conflict. He commanded the 18th Hussar Nezhinsky Regiment from August 1914 to May 1915. For his bravery, he was awarded the Order of Saint George, 4th Class, in 1915. He was promoted to general-major on May 24, 1915.
Gurko subsequently served as the chief of staff for the 14th Army Corps from August 1915 and as the commander of the 16th Cavalry Division from April 1917.
Russian Civil War
Following the collapse of the Russian Empire, Gurko sided with the anti-Bolshevik forces in the Russian Civil War. He supported General Pavel Bermont-Avalov and traveled to the headquarters of the Armed Forces of South Russia on his behalf.
Post-War Years
After the war, Gurko emigrated to France. He assumed the role of chairman of the Association of Leib Guard Uhlan Regiment, which he had previously served as vice-chairman.
