Andronikos II Komnenos: Fifth Emperor of Trebizond
Andronikos II Komnenos reigned as the Fifth Emperor of Trebizond from 1263 to 1266. Born to Emperor Manuel I Komnenos and his first wife, Anna Xylaaloi, Andronikos II inherited the throne upon his father's death.
Trade and Diplomacy
Like his predecessor, Manuel I, Andronikos II continued to enhance Trebizond's commercial significance. However, during his three-year reign, the empire faced significant territorial setbacks.
Loss of Sinop
Andronikos II's reign was marked by the loss of Sinop, which had been conquered by his father. This loss proved detrimental, as the Turks established a formidable fleet at the port of Sinop, posing a threat to Trebizond's maritime trade.
Withdrawal from Constantinople
The loss of Sinop shattered the imperial ambition to reclaim Constantinople. Consequently, Trebizond ceased its involvement in Byzantine affairs.
Succession to the Throne
Andronikos II's reign came to an abrupt end in 1266 when he passed away under mysterious circumstances. His brother, George the Grand Komnenos, succeeded him as the next Emperor of Trebizond.
