Astronaut Jeffrey Sherwood Ashby

Jeffrey Sherwood Ashby is a former NASA astronaut who has participated in various military operations and space flights. He was born on June 16, 1954, in Dallas, Texas, USA.

Education and Military Service

Ashby completed his high school education in Evergreen, Colorado, in 1972. He then attended the University of Idaho and obtained a Bachelor's degree in 1976. Later, he pursued a Master's degree at the University of Tennessee in 1993. In 1986, Ashby graduated from the United States Navy Test Pilot School, commonly known as "Topgun."

He joined the United States Navy in 1976 and served in various aviation units on US aircraft carriers. Ashby actively participated in combat missions during the "Operation Desert Storm" in the Persian Gulf and the United Nations operation in Somalia. Throughout his military career, he accumulated over 6000 flight hours on various aircraft.

Space Missions

In December 1994, Ashby was selected as a NASA astronaut and joined the astronaut corps. He embarked on his first space flight from July 23 to 28, 1999, as the pilot of the space shuttle Columbia on the STS-93 mission. The mission lasted 4 days, 22 hours, 49 minutes, and 37 seconds. His second space flight took place from April 19 to May 1, 2001, as the pilot of the space shuttle Endeavour on a mission that lasted 11 days, 21 hours, 30 minutes, and 00 seconds. In total, Ashby has spent 16 days, 20 hours, 19 minutes, and 37 seconds in space.

Awards and Honors

Ashby has been honored with numerous awards and medals, including various accolades from the United States Navy and NASA's "Space Flight" medals in 1999 and 2001.
