Dana Reneé Ross was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. At the age of 17, she confided in her mother about her homosexuality, which was met with hostility. Ross attempted suicide but survived. After graduating high school, she briefly attended the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Seeking stability, Ross joined the military but was discharged under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy when her sexuality was exposed.
Transition and Exile
Upon her return, Ross befriended a drag queen who introduced her to transgenderism. Her mother and stepfather disowned her after learning of her identity, forcing her to move in with her father in Roanoke, Virginia. She subsequently relocated to Hollywood, Florida, where she supported herself through modeling and escort work. Ross later moved to Chicago, Illinois, and began working at a transgender outreach center.
Career in Technology and Entertainment
While living in Hollywood, Ross pursued interests in web development and graphic design. In 2014, she founded TransTech Social Enterprises, a technology company. Her breakout role as an actress came in 2016 with her appearance in the documentary miniseries "Her Story." Ross also had supporting roles in the television series "Transparent" and "Claws" before landing a regular role in the groundbreaking show "Pose." She was cast in the ninth season of "American Horror Story: 1984" after leaving "Pose" in its second season.
Personal Life
Ross identifies as Buddhist. She has spoken openly about her experiences as a transgender woman and an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
