Angelina of Serbia: A Saint's Life
Early Life and MarriageAngelina, the daughter of Albanian Prince George Arianiti, was born into a royal family. She married Stefan Branković, the Despot of Serbia, and their union produced two sons, George and John, and two daughters, Mara and Milica.
Exile and Hardship
When Stefan was overthrown, Angelina endured ten years of hardship and hiding from Ottoman Turks in the Italian region of Friuli. Her husband's death in 1476 left her widowed and alone.
Resettlement in Srem
In 1486, Angelina and her children found refuge in Srem, where King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary granted them an estate. She arranged for her husband's remains to be transferred there from Friuli.
Monastic Vocation and Foundation
Angelina embraced monastic life in 1509, taking the name Angelica. She sought help from Grand Prince Vasily III of Russia, requesting financial assistance for a church to house her husband's remains, which were already venerated as miraculous. She purchased land, and with Vasily III's funds, a monastery was constructed and named the Krušedol Monastery. Angelina became its abbess.
Death and Sainthood
Angelina passed away in 1520, her life marked by unwavering faith, adversity, and service to her people. She was canonized as a saint by the Orthodox Church, and her memory is celebrated on July 1, July 30 (Feast of Serbian Saints), and December 10 (with her husband Stefan and son John).
