Early Life and Education
Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was born on August 18, 1962, in Ibbenbüren, Germany. She attended the Goethe Grammar School in her hometown and later completed a two-year apprenticeship at the Deutsche Bank branch in Osnabrück. From 1993 onwards, she worked at her family's hotel.
In 2003, Kramp-Karrenbauer enrolled in the FernUniversität Hagen, a distance learning university.
Political Career
Early Political ActivitiesIn 1998, Kramp-Karrenbauer joined the Young Union, the youth wing of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). In 2004, she was elected to the council of the city of Tecklenburg.
Election to the Bundestag
In 2013, Kramp-Karrenbauer was elected to the German Bundestag as a representative of the Steinburg III constituency in North Rhine-Westphalia. From 2017 onwards, she served as parliamentary secretary of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.
Marriage Rights Vote and Reelection
On June 30, 2017, Kramp-Karrenbauer voted against the legalization of same-sex marriage in Germany. Despite this controversial stance, she was reelected to her constituency with 67.675% of the vote in the September 2017 parliamentary elections.
Appointment as Minister of Education
On March 14, 2018, Kramp-Karrenbauer was appointed as Federal Minister of Education and Research in Angela Merkel's fourth government.
Personal Life
Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer is married to Lothar Karliczek, a commercial airline pilot who has worked for Eurowings since 2017.
